5 Skin Care Tips For Hot Weather

5 Skin Care Tips For Hot Weather

For us here in Upstate New York summer is winding down and coming to an end. I know, it makes me want to cry too. 😪

That being said, we don't want to add bad skin on top of bad weather. The care your skin needs during the hot summer months are different from the care your skin needs in the winter. If you're like me, the summer months are about getting the perfect tan and a nice glow. And I figure if I gradually work my way up, I won't need to any of those chemical filled sunscreens on my skin. But I don't stop to think about how the sun's UV rays can really be damaging. Protecting, hydrating and nourishing the skin in hot weather can be a dreadful routine. Thankfully, I've put together a list of 5 tips to keep the skin looking and feeling healthy all year long.

1. DEODORANT/BODY WASH

I don't know about you, but I sweat a lot. And not just in the summer. Perspiration can cause many skin issues so fighting sweat should be at the top of the list. A buildup of sweat could lead to a rash and frequent washing can help prevent that, but make sure you choose a gentle cleanser that won't dry out or irritate your skin.

I like to make my own homemade deodorant for a few reasons. 1) I can choose my own recipe so I can pick what ingredients I want in it, 2) I can use organic ingredients and 3) I don't have to spend $10 for an organic bar of deodorant. I like to use this DIY recipe by Mamma Instincts. Nice clear instructions with pictures. I bought all organic ingredients for this recipe. I like this organic baking soda from amazon:

If you want to skip the hassle of making it yourself, I have used this organic lavender deodorant from North Coast Organics.

It kept me from sweating and kept me smelling good at the same time.

If you're a fan of body wash (which my family is), you can buy our Organic Honey Body Wash HERE. It makes your skin feel silky, moisturizes and doesn't leave that dried out feeling, and the essential oils have cleansing properties.

2. SUNSCREEN

Hot weather can mean lots of sunshine, and wearing sunscreen is probably the most important thing you can do to protect skin from the sun. Sunscreen should be applied every two hours or more frequently if you are sweating a lot or doing activities in water. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and refers to the theoretical amount of time you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned. For example, an SPF of 15 would allow you to stay in the sun 15 times longer than you could without protection. (Aging Well)

During the summer months, if we are applying a natural or organic sunscreen as needed, we can keep our skin healthy and better prepared to go into the harsh winter months. This is the sunscreen I use on me and my family.

It's all natural and certified organic, safe enough for my baby's skin, water resistant and not tested on animals.

I also apply our all natural lip balm (just 4 simple ingredients) all year long to keep my lips hydrated while out in the sun or skiing down a mountain. With a natural SPF from the coconut oil and a ton of benefits from the peppermint, it makes my lips healthy all year long.

3. NATURAL SOAP

Since skin tends to be more prone to breakouts in warmer weather, it’s a good idea to take measures to prevent acne flare-ups. Some common conditions that occur in hotter weather, such as acne mechanica occurs when high temperatures are combined with repetitive rubbing. Washes and topical creams containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can help prevent and treat these types of breakouts, however, they tend to dry out your skin. One way to help prevent flare-ups is to use an all natural or organic soap on your body. Commercial soaps bought over the counter can have MANY different harmful chemicals that your body is absorbing. Parabens, Phthalates, Petrochemicals, Synthetic Perfume, and Artificial Coloring have been known to cause health problems, including cancer, and illnesses in humans. Check your bath and body products, if the ingredients list any of these, THROW IT AWAY!

We offer many different varieties of Organic Goat's Milk Soaps. According to Goat Milk Stuff, "Unprocessed, raw goat milk fresh from the farm contains the following benefits.

1. Alpha Hydroxy Acids. Goat milk contains alpha-hydroxy acids such as lactic acid which help remove dead skin cells from your skin’s surface. This leaves new cells on the surface of your skin that are smoother and younger looking. The alpha-hydroxy acids are so effective because they break down the bonds that hold the dead skin cells together. Removing dead skin cells will help many skin conditions by removing irritation. Water-based soaps may use harsh chemical acids to accomplish this, frequently with skin-damaging results.

2. Vitamins. Goat milk contains many vitamins, but is particularly high in Vitamin A, which is necessary to repair damaged skin tissue, and maintain healthy skin. There have been several medical studies showing that creams made with Vitamin A reduce lines and wrinkles, control acne, and provide some psoriasis relief. Water-based soaps can be artificially fortified with vitamins, but most aren’t.

3. Cream. Fat molecules are an important part of making good soap. The cream that is present in goat milk helps boost the moisturizing quality of goat milk soaps. Since many people suffer from dry skin, particularly in the winter months, this is an important quality for soap. Goat milk soap will not dry your skin out like many other soaps. This is important because keeping skin naturally moisturized helps keep skin healthy.

4. Minerals. Goat milk contains important minerals for the skin such as selenium. Selenium is believed by scientists to have an important role in preventing skin cancer. Selenium can also help prevent damage to the skin from excessive time in the sun. Although the water used in other soaps may contain minerals such as calcium, sodium, or iron (commonly found in tap water), that’s not much help when it comes to your skin."

Because of the disinfecting and soothing properties, Tea Tree and Lavender oils can be used to treat acne. Also, applying activated charcoal to your skin, it's claimed, will remove waste and debris from your skin's surface and can even extract toxins from beneath the skin, according to Health 911. The antibacterial properties of charcoal can also help alleviate infections, or keep them from happening. Try our sample sizes and see for yourself...you WON'T be sorry!

4. LOTION

Hydration. Hydration. Hydration. I feel like this was my kids first word I said it so much. Keeping your body hydrated is so important. Especially in the heat, staying hydrated can prevent skin from succumbing to the drying effects of that brutal summer heat. Moisturizing daily with a natural or organic lotion can keep your skin from seeing those effects. Vitamin E oil is a highly beneficial ingredient for the skin, especially when it’s combined with other antioxidants. Our Lavender Body Cream is perfect for just such an occasion. With Vitamin E oil and Lavender essential oil, the healing properties are through the roof. The Aloe Vera acts as a moisturizer, has healing properties, lessens visibility of stretch marks and fights aging. Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties, so it’ll help if you’re suffering from any type of fungal infection. It’s also great at keeping moisture from escaping. Shea butter has a slightly deeper moisturizing effect and it’s anti-inflammatory, so it does a great job of calming irritated skin. Shea butter also helps heal abrasions and wounds. Our lotion will keep your skin looking and feeling great. Our lotion is also GREAT for sensitive skin....and, a LITTLE bit goes a LONG way!

5. BODY SCRUB

Prevention is Key! We've talked about some of the things you can do to help your skin in hot weather. The last of our tips is exfoliation. Exfoliation can rid the skin surface of dead skin cells that are clogging pores. Our Activated Charcoal Exfoliating Scrub is gentle enough to use on your face and effective for the whole body. Activated charcoal can give your skin extra purification and the Frankincense oil will protect it. Apply by scooping out a small amount from the jar and rubbing in circular motions all over your face or body. Then use a dampened cloth with warm water to scrub it off. Activated charcoal, also known as activated carbon, is a highly porous substance that’s been "activated" in order to absorb certain chemicals and toxins. It's a great way of introducing a fresh layer and getting that glow you want.

Activated Charcoal Exfoliating Scrub - $9.49
